Is Domestic Abuse On The Rise In Canterbury?

Reports of domestic abuse have increased significantly in Canterbury.

Over the last 5 years, an FOI request revealed, that reports of domestic abuse have increased by 980.

The last year alone records the steepest increase, with recorded cases increasing by 49%.

A Kent Police spokesperson did not confirm that reports have increased but they offered advice saying: “Our first priority will always be to make sure a victim is safe. No matter who you are we will support you. When an offence is reported, we will investigate and throughout the investigation, we will take your wishes into account when we decide what to do next.

“If you or your family are in immediate danger don’t be afraid to call the police on 999. Otherwise please contact Kent Police on the 101 or visit your local police station or Domestic Abuse One Stop Shop to speak with an officer/staff member in confidence.”

A Canterbury woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I suffered verbal abuse from my boyfriend for months, he manipulated me and put me down so much that I’ve had to have therapy. If it wasn’t for the abuse charity, Rising Sun, I would still be in that abusive relationship.”

Rising sun is a charity in Canterbury that supports adults, families, and children to live a full life, free from domestic abuse.

“There’s still a long way to go. We passionately believe that we can end domestic abuse and create a safer world for everyone.

“We offer free counselling, a freedom programme and a family now scheme.”
