5 activities for families this May half-term

With the May half-term just a few weeks away, many families will be planning what to do with all the time off.

Within Canterbury, there are a range of days out and activity sessions to keep families entertained.

Canterbury Cathedral

For families who are interested in history, Canterbury Cathedral could be a great place to go this May half term.

On May 26 to May 30, they are offering family tours for children aged six to 13.

This tour tells the famous story of Thomas Becket and other historic stories of the Cathedral.

As well as this, the Cathedral are hosting stone week activities, for children to explore the building and the opportunity to try stone carving.

Whilst the activities are of no extra cost, they are included with a regular admission ticket.

Baking events

Between May 28 and May 30, Fenwick in Canterbury are hosting children’s bakery classes and sparkling cream teas for adults.

Kids tickets cost £15 and include the experience to make or decorate six cupcakes and a mini afternoon tea.

Adult’s tickets cost £18 and include sparkling wine and freshly baked scones.

For any children that love getting creative and baking, this could be a perfect opportunity to have fun away from your own kitchen.

Connecting with nature

For families that love the outdoors, there are a number of events happening around Canterbury for those that love nature.

There is a nature retreat in West Blean and Thornden Woods from Kent Wildlife Trust.

This would be ideal for those looking for a relaxing day out for older children.

This event includes crafts in the forest as well as a chance to connect with the environment around you.

For those looking for a more active connection with nature, Forage Box are hosting foraging workshops in Toddler’s Cove Playground in Canterbury.

The session runs for two hours at £25 per person, with reduced ticket prices available for children with under-5s free.

Both of these are being held on May 18, just before the half-term.

Arts and crafts

An ongoing event at the Beaney is celebrating the works of author Judith Kerr and her book ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea”.

The event includes a chance to play, get creative and a photo opportunity at the table.

The event is on every day except on Mondays until June 8, so will work perfectly for a family looking for a day out over the May half-term.

Just outside Canterbury, there is a minibeast trail and crafts at Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park in Faversham.

Towards the end of the half-term on May 31, the event lasts around two hours.

Children will get the chance to learn about the minibeasts in the park as well as be creative with craft activities.

Live shows

Towards the end of the half-term, the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury are hosting a number of family shows for half-term.

On June 1 and 2, there is a showing of The Worst Princess a comedy show based on the children’s book by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie at £14 for an adult ticket and £12 for a child’s ticket.

Pirates Love Underpants is also coming to the Gulbenkian on May 16 and 17 just before half-term begins for £15 for an adult ticket and £13 for a child’s ticket.
