Tunbridge Wells mum shortlisted for ‘Young Business Person of the Year’
A Tunbridge Wells woman whose job is to make children happy is a finalist for the Young Business Person of the Year award.
Jessica Nelson has a children’s parties business based in Kent providing entertainment in the form of singing princesses and magical characters.
The mother-of-two ensures everything is tailor-made to each individual party or events needs with games, dancing, singing, prizes plus more.
The Times Business Awards have chosen her as a shortlist and they aim to recognise “excellence in local businesses”.
Jessica Nelson said: “I only started the business just over two years ago, so to already be shortlisted for an award like this is just amazing.
“I was shocked to see my name in the Times of Tunbridge Wells as a finalist and I’m up against some really tough competition. I’m a mum of two children and I can’t pretend it’s been easy starting my own business.
“Once Upon a Wish really kicked off while I was pregnant with my second child, and I started it with no business loan or anything, I totally funded the whole thing by myself.”
She continued: “Before I started the business, I was a full-time mum on benefits and I really wanted a job that enabled me to be around for the children as well as make a living.
“I created the idea to show my son Oscar that I could create a good life for us and actually have a career for myself despite my rocky start.”
The 28-year-old added: “I wanted other parents to be able to create special memories with their little ones and take the stress out of planning children’s parties. A lot of students studying musical theatre or dance work for me too and it’s a great way for them to work in their chosen field while training.
“I’m really lucky to have a supportive team who represent my company as well as a supportive partner and family who put up with me and my random ideas and plans.”
Jessica also organises local hospital visits at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, where she and her princesses put on a special party in the children’s ward.
The Times Business awards are on May 30.
Other finalists include Support Local Pop Up, Duke & Hyde and Pasta Verdi Ltd.
