Lidl in Canterbury announces closure after 20 years
The popular supermarket Lidl, has announced its closure in a longstanding Canterbury location.
The store located on Sturry Road will be shutting its doors on May 28th, the nearest branch will be Herne Bay after this, which is over five miles away and not suitable for everyone.
Many locals have concerns that the closure will impact low-income families and students most as they rely on the value Lidl offers.
Suggestions for a new Lidl location in Canterbury are already being suggested on social media
@LidlGB I have just seen that you are closing the Canterbury Lidl which is a huge blow. Could you open a new store in the Morrisons site just off the A2?

This happens just 18 months after the Aldi next door had opened and an Asda opening across the street.
Many of the staff losing their jobs have spoken about the challenges this may present financially, especially with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
An anonymous employee at the store shared they thought it was all for “financial gain”.
A spokesperson for Lidl says the supermarket is “no longer fit for purpose” as a reason for the announced closure.
They confirmed hopes of finding a new spot for Lidl in the city and they will be helping staff with employment replacements as soon as possible.
The teams have said they are “Actively looking for new suitable sites in Canterbury for a replacement store.”
