Exclusive: A sharp rise in animal neglect across Kent

Animal neglect cases have more than doubled since 2020, as revealed by a freedom of information request to Kent Police.

The figures show that 14 cases were reported in 2020 compared to 30 cases reported in 2024.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA in Kent said: “Sadly, animal cruelty reports seem to be on the rise, and they tend to spike in the summer – so we’re preparing for a difficult period ahead.

“But rescuing animals from cruelty, investigating harm caused to them and acting to prevent animal abuse, is a job no other charity does. The RSPCA will always be here to pick up the pieces and show those animals the kindness and care they deserve.”

However, the RSPCA have warned that animal neglect cases tend to increase dramatically during the summer period.

“We don’t know why animal cruelty peaks in summer, but we believe it’s because of the longer days and more people are out to witness acts which they report to us.

“We see all kinds of reports – from intentional harm of animals to abandonments and neglect.

“Sadly, in the summer we see a peak in attacks on wildlife, which is because generally it is more active and also more people are around as the weather is nicer and the days become longer.”

The RSPCA told Sky News in 2024 that animal neglect cases are mainly fuelled by social media, and that the public could play more of a role in preventing animal cruelty.
