Student found dead in accommodation

Students have expressed their shock after a woman was found dead in university accommodation.

The 20-year-old, who has not been named, was found when police attended the St Georges Student Center at 6:45 on January 19th.

The student studied at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Students have expressed their shock and sadness on hearing the news.

Alice O’Shaughnessy , who is in her first year at Christ Church and knew of the girl said: “To hear the news of a girl my age and many of my friends ages passing away is sickening. I cannot imagine the family and close friends pain they now have to live with forever. It scary to think life is so fragile.”

Many students at the university have also received an email on behalf of Phil Semmens, President of Education and Wellbeing. The email suggests where students can receive help for mental health issues if they or a friend need it. The email lists the services that the university offers as well as outside providers which support people with mental health issues.

In the email Phil said: “Many of us are affected from time to time by anxiety, low-mood or feelings of not fitting in or sometimes, something unexpected can happen to knock you sideways. Research shows the best way to cope with these feelings is to talk about them whether to your friends, family or colleagues.”

A spokeswoman for the university said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends, and we would like to remind all students and staff that help and advice is available through the university support services.”
