Kent Police issue warning as victims lose over £2m to Coronavirus scams
Kent Police have issued a warning after it was revealed that over £2m has been stolen in Coronavirus related scams already.
The caution comes after Action Fraud revealed a total of £2,360,727 has been lost to scammers this year as criminals prey on the COVID-19 epidemic.
Action Fraud also revealed that they have had over 4,000 reports reports of coronavirus-related phishing emails, with coronavirus-related frauds making up 3-5% of all fraud reports they are currently recieving.
The Kent Police Economic Crime Unit tweeted asking the public to remain vigilant, warning people to “never assume, never believe, and always confirm”.

Coronavirus scams
The Citizens Advice Bearau warn people to be on the look out for the following scams during the lockdown:
- Advertising face masks or medical equipment at high prices
- Emails or texts pretending to be from the government
- Emails offering life insurance against coronavirus
- People knocking at your door and asking for money for charity.
They also offer the following advice to avoid being scammed:
- If you recieve emails or texts about coronavirus from someone you don’t know, or from an unusual email address, don’t click on any links or buy anything
- Don’t give money or personal details to anyone you don’t know or trust – for example someone who knocks on the door and offers to help.
If you or anyone you know thinks they may have been scammed, they should report it on the Action Fraud website or by dialing 0300 123 2040.
