Canterbury beer gardens you could enjoy this summer
As the warmer weather arrives in Canterbury, beer gardens are soon to become busier.
We took a look at the five best beer gardens in Canterbury, to sate the need to enjoy the better English weather:
White Hart Inn – Worthgate Place, Canterbury
Soak up Canterbury’s largest beer garden at White Hart Inn as the we head towards summertime.
They handpick British and International wines, gins, ciders, with real ales and specialty cocktails.
They host live music, are pet friendly and have free WiFi to enjoy during your stay.

The Penny Theatre – Northgate, Canterbury
With a large courtyard beer garden, The Penny Theatre is a great place for relaxing with a drink in the springtime.
A springtime event that they are planning is centred around enjoying a “fresh, fruity and downright delicious” cocktail within their beer garden.
Some of their drinks on the Springtime Sips event are:
- Flower power: Belsazar rosé vermouth, Gordon’s pink gin and Fever-Tree elderflower tonic, with refreshing pink grapefruit and an edible flower.
- Pretty Paloma: Olmeca Blanco tequila with pink grapefruit, lime and soda and garnished with pink grapefruit and an edible flower.
- Southside Seville: Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla gin, lime, mint and an edible flower.
This is a booked event that they plan to run into the summer.
The Dolphin – St Radigunds Street, Canterbury
With a traditional pub feel, The Dolphin is a great place to enjoy a pint or a glass of wine in their spacious garden.
They are family friendly, pet friendly and boast live music and quiz nights on their Facebook page.
They also use their BBQ in the beer garden in the summer, which can be seen below.
Old City Bar – Oaten Hill Place, Canterbury
Just outside of the historic city walls, Old City Bar provides a respite from the crowd.
A traditional bar greets you as you enter, with “one of the biggest beer gardens in Canterbury,” they say on their website.
Old City Bar definitely caters for more family outings with table tennis, pool, a popular pub quiz and regular live music, it’s definitely one to visit in the summer.
The Shakespeare – Butchery Lane, Canterbury
In a quiet lane off of the main high street, The Shakespeare highlights the need for a peaceful courtyard garden.
The pub focuses on their array of “traditional British classics, Kentish gourmet burgers and artisanal sharing boards” as a focal point of their business.
The ales and lagers on offer at The Shakespeare are also local, brewed around 10 miles away at Shephard Neame in Faversham.
The Shakespeare also has a wine bar at the back of the courtyard garden that is home to more than 45 different wines, for when the grain gets to be too much.
