Kent Cricket to host their first ever LGBTQ+ cricket taster session

Kent Cricket are set to host an LGBTQ+ cricket taster session next Thursday at The Spitfire Ground in Canterbury.

The event will be free to attend and the first of its kind to come to the city.

Equality, diversity and inclusion advisor Susan Rooney, who is leading the session, said: “There are a few reasons we are holding a cricket ‘taster’ event.

“We want to encourage people from our local LGBTQ+ community to experience the game and our venue, as we know many have never crossed the gates into our ground.”

She added: “We expect skill levels will vary, so we would encourage everyone to attend, and have fun at our free cricket taster event.

“Of course, if you currently play cricket, and identify as LGBTQ+ or an ally, we’d love to have you on the team!”

The event is two hours long from 6-8pm and aims to give people a chance to try out the sport and meet others who are interested.

Parade Director at Pride Canterbury, Jason Friend, said: “We are thrilled about the upcoming LGBTQ+ cricket session in Canterbury run by Out4Cricket and Kent Cricket.

“It’s a great opportunity for all different skill levels and encourages diversity within cricket.

“We hope it will attract new interest from LGBTQ+ people and allies who might not have considered playing the sport before. I’m sure it’ll be a fantastic event.”

Kent Cricket previously held a Pride themed match in June last year which included colourful fire works and attracted a lively crowd.
