The Goods Shed – Canterbury’s hidden market
The Goods Shed is a farmers’ market, food hall and restaurant situated in Canterbury.
Opened back in 2002, it is located right next to Canterbury West Station.
Inside the market hall there are a variety of different stalls, which include vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, a bakery and wine among others.
“We’re probably better known in bits of France than we are in Canterbury.”
I spoke to George Ward at the ‘Cheese Makers of Canterbury’ stall in the market, who told me what he thinks about it: “We make cheese so we wanted somewhere to sell it and this really is the best way of getting a presence in Canterbury. Relatively the rents are low for somewhere so close to the city centre. We’ve got our own car park which, you know what Canterbury’s like, that’s a big, big plus.
“This is somewhere that you come to get good food and not to rush it, which means on the whole people are in a good mood, which means we’re in a good mood!
“It’s curious that we’re probably better known in bits of France, Belgium and Holland than we are in Canterbury.”
The market is open from 9am to 7pm Tuesday to Saturday (6pm close in Winter), from 10am to 4pm on a Sunday and closed on Monday’s.
The restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday with varying opening times which you can see on the website.
