Speeding motorists jailed after collision in Sheerness

Two speeding drivers involved in a Sheerness collision that seriously injured two children and a pensioner, have been jailed.

David Slater, 40, and Bradley Marsh, 26, were both travelling at high speeds when a three-car pile-up in Brielle Way took place in August 2017.

The collision saw Mr Slater lose control of his car while taking a corner at 50mph. He was being followed too closely by Marsh, who drove into the back of his car, causing it to cross lanes and plow into an oncoming car.

At Maidstone Crown Court on April 29, Mr Slater, of London Road in Sittingbourne, pleaded guilty to three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 2 years and disqualified from driving for 4 years.

Mr Marsh, of Railway Road in Sheerness, was sentenced to six months imprisonment after admitting dangerous driving and disqualified for two years and three months.

The court heard that at approximately 6.25pm on 18 August two years ago, both drivers approached Brielle Way, where there is a speed limit of 30mph.

Two children in Slater’s car, sustained serious injuries to their head, back and neck and were taken to a London hospital. A police investigation found that neither were properly strapped into the car.

The driver of the oncoming car, who is in their 70s, also sustained injuries which required treatment at a London hospital.

Appalling driving

PC Natalie Rowley, from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit was shocked by their driving.

She said: ‘Slater and Marsh both showed appalling standards of driving in the moments leading up to the collision.

“The choices they made left three innocent people with serious, life-changing injuries.

‘The consequences of their actions could easily have proven to be fatal.”
