Local Canterbury dance group, Kent Dance, have announced the dates and timetables for their charity week in support of Rising Sun.
This year they have chosen the charity ‘Rising Sun’ who offer support for domestic abuse victims in Kent and Canterbury and will be showcasing their talents from May 15-22.
Kent Dance is one of the biggest student societies on the University of Kent campus, winning society of the year 2021/22. They hold non-competitive and competitive classes for all members.
Ballet, Tap, Contemporary, Jazz, hip-hop, and Bhangra are some of the styles of dance they practice at Kent Dance.
Rising Sun provide a safe place and counselling for adults, children’s and families over the 40 years.
They support people through every step of removing abuse from their live and improving their safety.
Kent Dance aim to make a donation of around £2000 to Rising Sun and they have already hosted a charity ball event this year which raised £700 this helped provide fire safe doors for those in need.
Despite their success, a spokesman from the group said: “We have not set a target of how much we would like to raise.”
Rising Sun and Kent Dance have been in contact over the course of this academic year.
The dance company hope “that the money we raise wont only help women and girls in the local area receive counselling and education surrounding incidents of domestic violence but also bring attention to the Rising Sun charity itself.”
Hosting this charity week is a first for Kent Dance. however, it’s going to be one to remember with leading London dance studios such as Pineapple and Base. These classes are open to all abilities.
This is the set timetable for the week, Kent Dance explain how all they “ask attendees to donate a minimum of £2 per class on our just giving link.”
During the week they are hosting a range of workshops hosted by internal and external choreographers.
Kent Dance hope that “those that need help find the support system that they need in Rising Sun.”
