Unusual Ways To Prevent Your Christmas Cold

Christmas is just around the corner and the last thing you want is to get ill. Here are some unusual ways to prevent getting a cold.

Don’t go out in the cold with wet hair

The connection between wet hair and the sniffles does make sense. It makes you feel extra cold, causing you to shiver which uses up your energy, that would be otherwise fighting off colds and infections; making you vulnerable to viruses and bacteria lurking in the air.

Hot toddy

A hot toddy, is typically a drink made of liquor, often whiskey, and water with honey, herbs, and spices, and served hot. Whiskey is a great decongestant — the alcohol dilates the blood vessels, which makes it easier for your mucus membranes to deal with the infection.

Vicks VapoRub in your socks cures coughs

There have been claims that rubbing Vicks VapoRub on the soles of the feet can help to stop a person coughing. People are convinced that it works and it’s even trending on twitter!

Eating raw Garlic

Eat about 1 raw garlic clove every 3-4 hours. Just peel and eat

If you are not a fan of the taste, which I can’t imagine anyone would be, wash the garlic down by mixing it with orange juice.

A spokesman from Holland and Barrett said, The phytonutrient allicin, found in high levels in garlic but also in leeks, spring onions, and onions, also has been shown to support immunity and also may have an anti-viral effect.”

Feed a cold, starve a fever

The belief is that eating food may help the body generate warmth during a “cold” and that avoiding food may help it cool down when overheated therefore you get better sooner.

Zinc

Taking zinc within 24 hours of the start of symptoms helps shorten your sniffle, according to a 2013 Cochrane review. Significant effects were seen at doses of at least 75 mg per day, taken as long as your cold lasts.

Ginseng

Ginseng is one of the most popular natural remedies for colds. Chronic stress has been considered to weaken the immune system, therefore it can fight colds by shielding the body from the negative effects of stress.

Juices

The immune system needs a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals to keep its energy up and going, juices are the best way to get all your vitamins and minerals in one go, perfect if you’re always busy. Echinacea

Elizabeth Wall a Registered Nutritional Therapist says: “The herb Echinacea has been traditionally used as a means to boost the action of the immune system and so reduce susceptibility to illness. More recent evidence suggests it can help to reduce the severity and longevity of symptoms and so on this basis it is advised to use the herb in the early stages of illness and then through until symptoms have resolved.”
