Most dangerous areas in Canterbury – ranked by number of violent and sexual crimes

Here are the most violent areas in Canterbury ranked by the highest rates of reported violent and sexual offences.

Canterbury may be a tourist hotspot in Kent, but alarming figures reveal a darker truth about the crimes that take place within the historic city.

Over 5000 incidents of violent and sexual crimes were reported to Kent Police between March 2018 and February 2019.

On average, violent and sexual offences makes up at least a third of crimes reported in Canterbury.

1. Westgate

Westgate leads the board with nearly 1,000 reports in the last year.

Just in the area of Westgate, 923 violent and sexual offences were reported to Kent Police during the 12-month period.

Violent and sexual crime made up 29.50% of crimes reported in the area.

2. Heron

Second is the area of Heron with 552 violent and sexual crimes reported between March 2018 and February 2019.

These reports amount up to 39.7% of all crimes in Heron.

3. Barton

An area that falls close to the city centre, Barton comes in a third with 447 sexual and violent crimes reported.

This makes up 39.16% of all crimes in the area.

4. Northgate

Another lively area of the city, Northgate, follows with 404 reports of violent and sexual crimes.

29.62% of crimes reported in the area are violent and sexual offences – still the leading type of crime for Northgate.

5. St. Stephens

St. Stephens is the fifth area in Canterbury, with the highest rates of sexual and violent crimes reported – with 330 incidents in the past year.

The 330 reports made up 33.20% of crimes in the area that was bought to Kent Police’s attention.

6. Wincheap

Wincheap falls at sixth place with 305 reported incidents of violent and sexual crimes.

These made up 31.54% of all reported crime in Wincheap.

7. Harbour

More towards the coast, the area of Harbour follows with 274 reports of violent and sexual offences.

30.11% of crimes reported to Kent Police between March 2018 and February 2019 were violent and sexual cases.

8. West Bay

229 violent and sexual offences were reported to in the area of West Bay in the past year.

This amounted up to 39.83% of all crimes reported.

9. Seasalter

Seasalter falls in the ninth place with 172 incidents of violent and sexual offences reported in the last year.

This made up 34.40% of all crimes reported in Seasalter.

10. Gorrell

Kent Police received 167 violent and sexual crime reports in the area of Gorrell.

Almost half of crimes reported in the area were violent and sexual offences – a whopping 48.27%.

11. Chartham and Swalecliffe

In the past year, there were 165 violent and sexual offences reported in Chartham and Swalecliffe.

This makes up 41.30% of all crimes reported in the area.

12. Herne and Broomfield

Further from the city centre, Herne and Broomfield ranked at 12th place with 163 violent and sexual offences,

This was more than half of all reported crimes in the area at 50.15%.

13. Reculver

Reculver had 156 reported violent and sexual offences between March 2018 and February 2019.

The 156 reports made up 41.71% of all crimes in the area.

14. Greenhill and Eddington

A total of 149 violent and sexual offences were reported in Greenhill and Eddington, just around the northern district of Canterbury.

42.57% of all crimes reported in this area were violent and sexual incidents.

15. Blean Forest

Edging around Canterbury’s city centre, Blean Forest had 113 reports of violent and sexual offences in the past year.

This was 40.50% of all crimes in that area.

16. Barham Downs

89 violent and sexual crime offences were reported in the area of Barham Downs.

Despite the lower figures, incidents of sexual and violent nature still amount up to 47.34% of all crimes in the area.

17. Sturry North

The northern half of Sturry ranked higher than the southern half with 78 violent and sexual offences reported in the past year.

This made up 36.11% of all reported crimes in the area.

18. Marshside

Just beside Sturry, the area of Marshside falls below at 18th place with 77 reported incidents of violent and sexual offences.

37.93% of crimes reported to Kent Police in Marshside were of violent and sexual nature.

19. North Nailbourne

More towards the south-east district of Canterbury, North Nailbourne ranked as one of the areas with the lowest rates of violent and sexual offences with 68 reports.

However, an alarming 51.52% of all crimes reported in the area were violent and sexual offences.

20. Harbledown

Great news for the residents of Harbledown, despite it being on the outskirts of Canterbury’s city centre, it only had 65 cases of reported violent and sexual offences during March 2018 to February 2019.

This is low in comparison to the its neighbouring area of Wincheap which had 305 reports.

Violent and sexual offences still made up 31.71% of all crimes reported in Harbledown.

21. Sturry South

The southern half of Sturry had 56 reported violent and sexual offences which made up 37.84% of all crimes in the area.

22. Tankerton

The area of Tankerton ranked one of the lowest with 54 reports of violent and sexual crime offences – with amounted to 29.51% of all crimes reported to Kent Police.

23. Little Stour

Lastly, Little Stour is the area in Canterbury with the lowest number of reported violent and sexual crime offences with a total of 34 incidents.

However, over a quarter of crimes reported in the area were still violent and sexual cases.
